Megamind
Megamind is an enjoyable little romp through the world of the Superhero movie turned on its head. The bad guy wins and suddenly...there's nothing left for him to do! What a wonderfully unique little idea that's been expertly executed with fine animation, great characters, and superb voice acting. Megamind is one of those truly enjoyable little animated movies that will entertain the young ones but also satisfy adults; it's a complete package of fun, even if it does fumble around a bit and never quite finds a heart, but that's OK. It's superb for what it is and another winner for DreamWorks as the studio inches a bit closer to Pixar quality with each release. DreamWorks's Blu-ray 3D release of Megamind delivers a transfer that's a bit better than the 2D release, and the film is more enjoyable in 3D to boot. The pitch-perfect lossless soundtrack from the 2D release is retained, but the extras have been scrapped. Hopefully, DreamWorks will one day soon release this title free of the bonds of exclusivity and with most (hopefully all) extras intact. If that happens, it'll definitely come highly recommended.
Sanctum
Sanctum isn't everything it could be, nor does it do James Cameron's 3D techniques justice. It's a passable thriller with a passable cast and a barely passable script, nothing more. The same could be said of Universal's passable 3D Blu-ray release. It too isn't everything it could be. The 3D presentation enhances the experience ever so slightly, but the 3D itself is simply too spotty and inconsistent to leave a lasting impression. Thankfully, its DTS-HD Master Audio track and special features take away some of the sting. As it stands, Sanctum is a wee bit better in 3D, but not by very much.

Tron: Legacy is a surprisingly wonderful film that got it right on all accounts. It walks that very fine line of staying true to the look and feel of the original Tron while also paving its own way and serving as a showcase of visual effects that are the equal of anything out there today. Even in that light, the film smartly tones things down to stay true to the digital "grid" world as it was first envisioned in 1982. The effects play well with the picture's dark and subdued overlay, and it's made complete by a quality story, a fine script, and great characters. Tron: Legacy isn't a perfect movie; it get bogged down by a few slow stretches and some of the dialogue could use some refinement, but otherwise, it's winner and a worthy followup to a 1980s favorite. Disney's Blu-ray 3D release of Tron: Legacy is superb. Sporting a wonderful 1080p image that seamlessly fluctuates between not only 2D and 3D but its dual aspect ratios; a lossless soundtrack that's every bit the video's equal; and a nice array of 2D-only extras; this release, or better even Disney's ultimate Tron/Tron: Legacy Blu-ray 3D bundle, comes highly recommended
Gnomeo & Juliet
There's really nothing new here save for the play on words and the uniqueness of the characters. Gnomeo & Juliet is also structurally sound but thematically hollow, which in this case isn't a bad thing. The movie is little more than a fun diversion with a unique spin on an old and tired story, told through the eyes of...garden gnomes? It works, surprisingly enough, and while Gnomeo & Juliet won't go down in the annals of animated cinema as an all-time great, it's nevertheless a strongly-crafted and entertaining little picture that's sure to dazzle young audiences and even keep mom and dad entertained enough to sit through it once or twice. Disney's Blu-ray 3D release of Gnomeo & Juliet features a dazzling 3D transfer, a strong lossless soundtracks, and a relatively tiny assortment of 2D extras which is this release's only real weak spot. Recommended.
